About me

I live in Cary, NC, USA. I moved here recently with my husband Imre and my son Imre Domonkos. We came from Bethlehem, PA, and before that, we lived in Hamilton, ON, Canada for six years. Imre Domonkos was born in Canada.

As you already know, I am a linguist, freelancing and having fun with singing and dance. I also had some part-time jobs, having been a teacher’s assistant in a Canadian school and also in a preschool, then the companion of the cutest ever 93-year-old lady who lived at Queens Garden.  Since the end of August 2007, I am a stay-at-home mom.

After several years of reading and translating medical literature and psychology, I have started a blog (written in Hungarian) about women’s health, obstetrics, gynecology, newborn care, early childhood development and alternative medicine (herbal medicine).

I was born in Hungary but don’t ask me where I am from. My family lived in Kecskemét, Miskolc and Szolnok, we spent several years at each place. I graduated from Varga Katalin Grammar School in Szolnok, then moved to the capital city Budapest and began my university studies there. I lived in Budapest for seven years, most of my friends still live there, I met my husband there, I got married there, eventually my family moved there. So let’s say I am from Budapest.

I met my husband at St. Ignatius College, a Jesuit student residence with a focus on interdisciplinarity: students attending various universities lived there as a community and received further education in theology, philosophy, rhetorics, civil rights and whatever courses we wanted to take (history of music, ethnography, contemporary literature, economics etc.) We were also encouraged to apply for scholarships and spend one or more semesters at a foreign university. In the spring of 1999, I went to Vienna, Austria, to study linguistics and I fell in love with that city for life.

Between September 2002 and August 2008, my husband and I lived in Canada. I had thought it would be cold, but I have never seen a fall season as beautiful and warm as the ones in Ontario. I am crazy for birds and there are exciting colourful species there, they kept coming to the bird feeder on my windowsill all the time. However, I also learned there what “cold” really means. This is a climate with extremities: hot, humid summer with humidex reaching 45°C and cold, sunny winter with wind chill as low as -30°C. It takes time to get used to.

By now, I have seen quite a lot of both the U.S. and Canada. We went to Niagara Falls many times. We visited almost all cities and towns in the greater Toronto area, even canoed on the Grand River from Paris to Brantford. We spent a few summer days in Ottawa, Montréal and Québec city, also in Grand Bend at the Lake Huron. In November 2006, we had a 6-day trip to Banff and the Rockies. There are no words to describe the beauty of the landscape there. Shortly after moving to Bethlehem, PA, we explored Lancaster county and the Lehigh Valley. We also spent a few days in Washington DC, and I regularly went to New York to have fun.

New York is a bit too far away now for day trips, but I have found consolation in the South.  We have already marveled at the Outer Banks and visited Raleigh. The Triangle is a great place to live, Cary is green, quiet and full of nice people, just what the doctor would have ordered. I love the lakes, the trees, the birds and the butterflies.

Lots of great things to see. You can discover them for yourself in my photo album, too. Enjoy!
